....but comparing a family size car to a small town car?

    My thought too?

Do you want a family car or a small run-around?

If you are considering these two why not throw in a Ford Focus which would be about the middle ground?

Thats unhelpful and smacks of being xenophobic. Do you have anything solid to back up your opinions or are you basically just being anti french?

Maybe its got something to do with the highest MOT failure rates. French cars came out worst.

THe French still don't have the electrics know how, yet they fill the cars full of electric gadgets that usually fail quite quickly and end up cost a fortune to get fixed only to fail again down the line...........take a look at the laguna for example.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I would have said Mondeo out of those two as Ford climbing up the reliability chart while the French makes remain bogged down in the bottom third of the table. The Mondeo has those other qualities you mention too.

For my £4K I would get (and wife has) a Mazda 6, near the top of the reliability surveys, great to drive like a Mondeo with reasonable running costs. They are often voted best used car buy in their class in various magazines. At this age get a petrol though, the diesels are too costly to service especially at 72,000 miles and aren't economical enough to make up for it. They also have "problems". The facelift Mazda 6 from 2006 onwards had an excellent diesel engine well worth getting.
Watch our for creaky boot struts which were replaced under warranty on our car and also power steering fluid hose which was replaced by Mazda free of charge even thought he car was 4.5 years old and out of warranty - known issue.

As both cars are diesels, I'm assuming this was what you were after, so other cars for consideration:

Nissan Almera - Bit Boring but reliable
Seat Toledo (Saloon) - A Cheaper VW Bora
Skoda Octavia - Good all rounder (Usually top of reliability / owner surveys)

Would have suggested the Mazda6, but these can be very expensive for servicing

Diesel versions certainly can, others I thought not so bad but judge for yourselves, I happen to have this available, oh it's 75K mile diesel service that is scarey and not 72K as I posted earlier:
