Money that has been left in trust

Hey all,

This is a bit of a difficult situation. My uncle has come to me as his son is supposed to have been left a lot of money in trust by his son's granddad (the other side of the family). Relations with my uncle's ex haven't been good and they don't talk. But basically at 21 his son should have been left some money.

We don't know how true this is or how we can go about finding out who to talk to about it as the ex has all of the paper work. The mother is barely on talking terms with the son either.

Is there any solution to find out about this - would solicitors be able to find out about legally binding wills and money left in trust?

If the trust was set up by gd's will, then you can apply to ( I think) the probate office for a copy of the will. You will need the date of death and where he died. A search of the local paper should have an advert for any outstanding debts to be paid to the estate ( probably has a technical name). This should give the name of the firm of solicitors.
If the trust was set up during gd's lifetime, you could try the family solicitors. Are there any other relatives who are likely to be beneficiaries of the trust.
Otherwise the only hope is that trust tax returns will have been sent to (or should have been) HMRC. Whether you can persuade them to disclose any details to the son I am not sure. I think unlikely but it might be worth a letter.

Right, I'll do some research into this. Thanks.
