Repair or Replace?????

I own a 55 plate (Feb 2006) Mazda 3 diesel with about 63k on clock. I have a personal loan againt the car which runs until next year owing about 2 thousand ish give or take.

Have just had to turbo go on it (!!!!) haven't had the exact quote for repair as of yet but estimate will be around £1k plus service and MOT & new tyre needed this week (£200 ish). My friend is a mecanic at a independant gargae who will do the work and i imagine if the main dealer did the work it would be even dearer!

So ........ shall i just stump up, these things happen and run the car for another year or two.

or ... Parkers guide state the car is worth about £5k on average mileage part exchange, so mine maybe £4.5k to £4.7k ish.

Should i look at a part exchange deal at a dealer for something like a Chevrolet/Kia supermini 09 plates, 10k mileage with 2 yrs plus warranty with screen prices of around £4.5k. Look for a straight swap plus few hundred give or take. Run this for a year or two and then start again with something decent.
Or would a dealer run a mile as its not worth their effort taking a car with a knackered turbo??

Your thoughts/suggestions please?

    stump up for the repair

parkers say 5k but that is with a good engine
you think yours is 4.k with a repair costing 2k

I personally think you have more chance of finding rocking horse !!!!!! tha finding a dealer to buy
    I  MOJACAR
  • The devil in me says part ex it and keep quiet - half the dealerships don't even drive the cars they take in :D
  • Get the turbo overhauled at a fraction of that price, and keep the car.

is there an underlyng reason for early turbo failure, do you subscribe to starship mileages between oil changes and do you allow the turbo to warm up gradually and allow to cool slightly before shutdown?
  • £2k at mates rates????

As said, recon unit or get the turbo taken off, send it off to be recon'd yourself and get someone (your mate) to fix it back on, handing him a crate or 2 / box of fags / whatever takes his fancy
  • £2k at mates rates????y

Sorry typo .......... 1k (ish) for work!!

Anyone any links or companies that will recon/repair turbos? I'm in no great rush for the car as currently on crutches unable to drive anyway!!!

Will a turbo car still work, just not so fast, with a broken turbo? :D

I've seen this company recommended elsewhere http://www.midlandturbo.com

My son had good service from http://www.turbotechnics.com/docs/turbo/faults.htm

I wouldn't recommend driving a car with a faulty turbo especially a diesel. 1/ the turbo could have broken up into smaller pieces which could get inside the engine and ruin it completely, thus requiring not just a turbo but also a new engine.
2/ the turbo could pass the engine oil into the air intake which will act as a fuel and the engine will start to run on the engine oil and blow itself to bits as you would not be able to control the oil flow even by turning the engine off! then you will need another new engine and turbo.

Best option get your mechanic friend to price the job for him to supply and fit a new or recon (better option) turbo over a weekend in his time, he won't do it for a few crates of beer but would be half the price of the garage for cash:beer:
