Need ethernet cable for wireless?

Hi

I've never used wireless before, but i've just bought a router from Virgin Media so i can use my laptop wirelessly in my house.

I don't know much about it, but do i need an ethernet cable and, if so, should that come with the router?

usually they come with the router, if not its advisable to have one for setting up but not needed once up and running if you're not making too many changes to the config/wireless setup.

If all else fails they cost about £0.80 from ebuyer etc

there should be a cable supplied with the router, perhaps two, you will need one cable to connect the router to the modem.

It comes with an Ethernet cable to connect the router to your modem. The setup disk Virgin supply will sort out the wireless connection to your laptop for you without having to physically connect it.

Not when it's VM, as most of VM's customers are on the cable network, and they do not supply any modem routers, but always a separate modem* which then connects to the router of choice


To back up what has been said, you should get a short cable in the router box (every seperate router i've bought has had one as standard) to connect to the modem, then you can either use a wired connection (with another cable) to set the router up, or the setup CD for the router should allow you to set it up without a wire connecting the laptop/pc to the router



*Well apart from when they used to offer internet through STB, but that pretty much stopped when they reached 1mbit as the minimum speed as many of the STB's couldn't cope.

or does the op want a cable to connect the modem to the router and in which case there should be a cable in the box
