Pay@Pump Question ?

When I use my Visa Debit, Visa Credit Card or Mastercard at Pay@Pump I can fill up with £69 maximum, but when I use my Amex card I can fill up with £100 maximum !, why the difference ?.

Does the pump automatically turn off after that amount of fuel has been dispensed?

When I use my Maestro the limit is £59
  • Barclays Connect Visa (formerly Electron) is £99, and you only actually need about £1 in your account on the day you fill up (ie day before payday) as it takes a couple of days for them to process the charge

I don't know it just says maxium fill £69 (Or it could be £59) but on Amex its £100 ?.
  • The limit is set by the issuing cards provider. I myself have an ASDA Mastercard that will provide £70 of fuel in a single dispensation. I would imagine that unmanned pumps are easy targets and so limiting the maximum spend is just an extra security precaution.

My x used to work for the company that makes many of the card machines. The limit is set by the card provider, but he also said the pay at pump machines were easier to fiddle than the ATMs or machines in the shops. So advised me not to use them. However, I soon learned that he was full of poo so have used them again without any problems :D

Don't want to worry folks needlessly, but just to make you aware I read a yahoo article earlier today, warning debit card fraud was on the rise and one of the ways was cloning pay at pump machines as there are only a few manufacturers of these machines. It advised not using pay at pump for this reason. Given I regularly use my local 24 hour petrol station, chances are I won't stop. But I will be more vigilant. Just thought I should pass this on!

the limits are set by the individual companies, so are different, and for anyone who, like me, uses a pre-paid card, they don't all work and mine needs to have at least £50 credit on it, regardless of how much fuel I want to buy.

The one and only time I had problems with fraudulent purchases on my credit card was after using it at a pay@pump, but that was a few years ago, and I assume security is better now.
