Would you offer cash?

I'm hoping to win a collection only ebay item this evening. I'm completely happy with the seller's feedback, my question was answered helpfully and quickly, and inspection before bidding was offered.

Payment is by Paypal or cash on collection. Would you be kind and offer cash, or stick with Paypal and doing it by the book? It will be between £20 and £50.

Cash, if I was the seller I would insist on cash due to the fact you could (if you were dishonest) make a paypal chargeback for item not received. If the seller has been nice and kind to you so far do them a favour and save them some paypal fees aswell.

If the buyer has any sense they will insist on cash anyway.
  • nothing against ebay rules to pay in cash on collection.I don't think you are allowed to say cash on collection only any more though.Or are you thinking of offering cash to withdraw from auction? that is against ebay rules but does go on.

Cash wouldn't be breaking the rules! It's perfectly normal when collecting, and far better for sellers... not just because they won't pay fees on it.
Check you're happy with the item, pay cash, and the seller will thank you :)

If I were you (the buyer) i'd pay paypal to protect yourself.

If I was the seller however I would want cash, but wouldn't be able to demand it by the letter of the rules I believe.

It all depends on how much you trust the seller and how nice you want to be to them.

If you're collecting the item, why the need to protect yourself? Either it's as described and working, (good) or it's not (walk away)

Do as I say not as I do springs to mind.
Your going to collect the item in person where you can inspect it before paying how much more protection do you want?

    @ #7 and #8

It depends on what the item is... if its a rug then it should be quite simple, go there, inspect in a couple of mins and the pay cash and go home....

What if its a mobile phone though, short of sitting there all day testing everything there is still an element of the unknown... what if you get home and find out the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than 4 hours.....

As for "Do as I say not as I do".... smiley-rolleyes008.gif More a case of do as I do in one situation or do differently as I do in a different situation....

Your advice in post two is in the best interests of the seller but the OP is the buyer in this case so hardly relevant but don't let that stop you criticising me.

Not really your advising as a seller to only accept cash on collection but as buyer pay via paypal and collect.

Wrong because a seller cannot "only accept cash on collection"....

    To repeat myself.....

If I was the seller however I would want cash, but wouldn't be able to demand it by the letter of the rules I believe.

Wanting cash and asking asking / telling the buyer nicely that you would prefer cash is very different from "only accepting cash" which the seller wouldn't (by ebays rules) be able to do.
