my point was that if it was for a job that was £100 then I'd pay it and be done with it. If it was a job for thousends then I would start negotiating if you thought the job was done to a satisfactory standard. If it was thousends and a shoddy job then I would be talking to a solicitor.

However you didn't want to know that so as another poster said 'consult a solicitor' who is trained in this rather than using a forum where you would get views on it

A few years back, my Grandma was cold-called by a firm who were trying to get people to get their driveways redone. She said no, but came back later in the afternoon to find them doing it anyway.

When my mum heard about it, she called Trading Standards, who agreed to visit my Grandma's house early on the morning the cowboys said they'd be round to pick up the money. They weren't too happy to find a couple of trading standards officers answering the door rather than £1000.

And my Grandma got her driveway done for free.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Im not saying I wont pay, but Im not paying what they have asked for. I had already agreed the work to be done with someone else, who has agreed to do more work, for less money, they were recommended, so I know they are trustworthy.

I need to find the balance between what I owe the person meant to be doing it, for materials.. etc.. and the people who have done the job without my consent...

Ive heard of this happening, companies who have little or no work, conducting work they have not been told to do, then billing for it... weve all seen rogue traders!!!
As there is no contract, you don't owe them anything. In fact, you can insist [at your choice] that they either make good the job or pay for the work to be done.

Your only weak point is that as soon as you became aware they were doing the job, you would have to stop them.

So by coincidence you got a quote from this company, and then they mistake your house for someone elses??

Are they one of those 'we are doing quotes in the area' type companies who will have done lots of quotes in the same area?

Have you already signed a contract with the company you do want to do the work?

Are you going to tell us what they've done?

  • If you've genuinely signed nothing and given no authorisation for them to commence work on your property then no I wouldn't suggest you pay - why would anyone pay for work they haven't asked for? I don't care what work needs doing to my house/car/whatever - tradesmen don't simply start working on a job based on a quote that has not been accepted and the work not authorised by the owner - end of in my opinion.

Most reasonable people would have tried to get the works stopped when they realised a mistake had been made...why didn't you?

I suggest you go back and read the first post again, but this time with a bit more care and attention.
OP states quite clearly that they requested a quote, bur never received one from the company that did the work.
