Black and Decker BD405R drill/batteries

Have a B/D rechargable BD405/R drill 4.5volt which has four batteries in the handle.
Batteries will not take a charge so would it be possible to replace them with 3 C type rechargable ones. Not sure what spec they should be with regard to m/amps if it's possible. Charger works at 5.5volt---90m/amp.
Thanks any advice or help.
