Was the customer right to complain? What would you have done?

OP, I can only assume you're new to working with the general public. Anyone who has much experience of this kind of work will have dozens of stories of insane and irrational customers like yours. Don't think you'd get away from it working at a supermarket checkout. I can guarantee you won't have to wait long before someone is yelling at you for not accepting a photocopy of a £20 note as payment.
If you really don't like this kind of thing, aim towards a career that doesn't involve dealing directly with the public. But stick it out unless you find another job or taking up studying.

Reminds of a complaint I received last year because I told a client that faxing a cheque to me wouldnt be suitable.

When I was a cashier a rough looking woman tried to buy £50 of phone voucher using a scrap of paper with a credit card number written on it.0

I'd have done exactly the same in your situation.
Perhaps in the future a "well if it doesn't work, you may need the correct wall bracket."
Not pushy but giving them a nudge in the right direction in terms of giving advice.
Although I think even some people might think it's pushy...0 -
I hope the TV falls off the wall and kills them.

If I was faced with someone telling me they weren't allowed to sell me a TV without selling a bracket at the same time, they would lose the sale.
(If they decided to chuck it in for free, fair enough, though)
Your manager hasn't really thought this through.

I really really dislike being patronised in electrical stores - if I can even get a sales bod to lower himself to speak to a small, dumpy woman!
Spent 5 minutes trying to get the attention of someone in Curry's a couple of weeks ago (I have to keep going in there because it's the only major electrical place within travelling distance to me, although I do try very hard to find the necessaries anywhere else but there). Got blanked. Again. Of course, an idiot woman would only be looking at portable hard drives because she thinks they're pretty, wouldn't she? When the nearest sales guy walked past me to welcome a bloke that had just walked in, I stomped off.
And found a small computer shop had opened up round the corner.
With a bloke in it who was quite happy to speak to me, that didn't fall over with shock when I asked for a portable drive suitable for PC and Mac to backup Audition music projects, photographs and generalised gumpf, and went on to chat about the music, the rest of the equipment on the network and anything and everything techie related.
He got the sale.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
from my experience the public are HORRIBLE! in my job i would get complaints for everything... such as the weather... why they hadn't recieved notifications when there was Royal Mail strikes in their area they'd neglected to blame... obviously all MY fault! They put the wrong addresses on envelopes wrong email and I didn't get items... still my fault!
I do find the majority of people whether they are staff or customers are rude and chancers who try to get whatever they can for nothing!
its hard to deal with but try not to let it get you down... or do what I did and joke about them :-)0 -

C**ts.
I must admit that after my manager had said it to me, I had a similar-ish response lol.
As for women getting ignored in electrical stores, I dont think it's always intentional. So many times I've spoken to a woman who was on her own in the department and she nearly runs off saying "Oh no, I'm with him" and gesturing towards a man in the distance.
Some even get shirty that you're daring to speak to them about electrical things when they must CLEARLY be with their invisible husband.
But then most of the men seem to navigate there from womenswear and are just looking at the football.
Ah well, in a few short months I'll be part time and on my way to becoming a teacher. I'm bored of retail (again) after being back in it for 2 years.0
