Working Days Allowed

Hi All

Does anyone know the rules/regs regarding the days you are allowed to carry out major building work?

Neighbours are building extension and had diggers, concrete lorry etc running from 8am last Sat & Sun, i didnt say anything as didnt want to fall out and thought they were just catching up some time lost but they were there again from 8 this morning.

I think you'll find the environmental people at the Council will take a dim view of bilding works being carried out after before 8 am Monday to Saturday and after 6pm Mon - Fri and 1pm on a Saturday. Consult your individual Council for their precise stipulations.

They do tend to be a little more lax about DIY though where its more likely to be 8pm finish Mon - Sat and 1pm on a Sunday.

There is NO substitute whatsoever in these circumstances for an amicable discussion with your neighbour to discuss your concerns rather than resorting to waving a rule book in their face although I'm sure thats not your intention.

General construction work should be restricted to the following hours:

    Monday to Friday – 8am to 6pm
    Saturdays – 8am to 1pm
Noisy work prohibited on Sundays/Bank Holidays.

this is for the pro builders only. DIY are allowed more leeway.
the above is not set in stone however. exemptions are allowed for special/tricky building projects. i assume the olympic site is working 7 days per week?

the council will normally be informed first though.

generally its all about frequency. for a one off job no action is likely to be taken.
if its a daily occurance over many weeks/months, then action can be taken.

I don't think there is anything to say building work can't go on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless the council put something in the planning permission. There is of course the nuisance aspect; the environmental department of your council would be the people to contact about this, but as it isn't going through the night, and starting at a reasonable time in the morning, I doubt they would be particularly interested.

So the answer - speak to your neighbours.
