Could you give us the details of the ethernet adapter?
Sounds like a USB one? Are you plugging it directly into the computer or a USB hub?

Who makes it, the problem with the device saying it's not detected it could be a crappy rip-off with no actual drivers and Windows using the generic ones.

You'd be better off using a dedicated PCI card, assuming that its a PC and not a laptop.

why do you need a 10/100 Ethernet Adapter on a PC that runs VISTA. It will already have one integrated. Are you sure one isnt confling here?
Computers are like me, I get up in the morning and work...until I stop.
  • I have re written your post to make it a little more clear to me, Is this statement true?

Hi, I have bought an Ethernet adaptor, for use on a PC.

(to run modem with LAN cable to PC) What do you mean here?

My ISP is Virgin, PC is running Windows Vista, it works fine for a while then internet cuts off & a message pops up [saying USB device not recognised, a USB device attached has malfunctioned. Windows does not recognise it]. I have tried reloading the disc that came with it but it is still happening. Need quite simple instructions on how to remedy, please.

Hi beattiesman, You only use one cable!

    1) USB - OK
    2)Ethernet cat5 cable BEST

    z) Not both!

    >i may well get a router & try wireless if i cant sort it out
No, wait for me. You will get into a worse state.

Try to use a full stop (.) after the last character of a word
    Use a space after a (.)

Starting a new paragraph use a capital letter and also after a (.)

Capitalise the letter I, referring to oneself

It helps a lot in reading your matter.
