jpeg compressor

I have been sent some jpeg files from a recent holiday and I would liek to upload them to our family website.

Can someone recommend a free jpeg compressor ideal for jpeg dummies?

Probably a waste of time, since JPEG files are quite compressed already. Test one by going into Windows Explorer/My Computer, right-clicking on one and choosing "Send to Compressed (ZIPped) Folder". You might find a 1%-2% reduction in size.

You'd be better off deciding what size you want to display the pictures at (pixels, horizontally and vertically) and using one of the myriad graphics programs (e.g. IrfanView) to resize them down.

when you upload them do you want them to be viewed on the website or just stored so they can be downloaded and viewed?
For viewing on the website then just resize the pictures using Gimp of photoshop etc.
For just downloading them winzip is pretty good and have an album of pictures in 1 winzip compression file.

some of them are as large as 1600k, whereas some are as smaller as 15k. I want to display them on the website, but of course at 1600k, its not long before I hit a restriction.

    thanks anyway.

I use Picasa to manage my photos. Its free software from google http://picasa.google.co.uk/ It will scan your PC automatically for photos and categorise them into a list of folders. You can then either export these photos to somewhere on your PC and when exporting it gives you the option to resize the photos. If they aren't being printed then feel free to resize them to lower the file size.

Picasa can also use Picasa web albums if you wanted to showcase your photos online. Your need to sign up for a google account (which is free) and you can then upload photos directly from Picasa onto the internet.

Resize you can also reduce the quality of the Jpeg which helps too. Photoshop was good as it gave you an estimated file size before you clicked ok to resize. I used to reduce my photos by 50% to send in emails making them about 150k each, so you might want to reduce them to 30-40% of the original.

If you have Outlook - just do this quick n easy way to make them smaller in file size..

highlight and Rclick on the jpg files -
    send to mail recipient
    choose YES make them smaller
then in the mail message that appears drag them from that to another folder
and you have automatically resized MUCH MUCH smaller files ready to upload or email to whoever.

I've tried this feature with outlook (which is on my work pc) and the reduction in quality seems a bit too much! There did not seem much control over the resize settings such as which algorithm (bi-cubic, bilinear etc) is used and I suspect it just does a raw "resize". I've got an old version of outlook from 2003 so I suspect it might have been improved in the meantime.
