Faulty Playstation Three

I bought a PS3 from WH Smiths on 27/4/09 for £250. It has now developed a fault where it won't recognise any type of disc be it a game, dvd, blu-ray etc. (quite a common fault based on a google search or two)
I've lost the receipt and have been told the Sony warranty will not repair the console unless I can provide proof of purchase - and they're unwilling to accept my bank statement. Instead theyw ant to charge me over £100!
Am I able to take this back to the store for a replacement under the SOGA rather than use the warranty?

Your contract is with WH Smith, so take it back there, and the bank statement is perfectly adequate as proof of purchase. You do NOT need the receipt.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
But they are unlikely to replace itSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

Maybe not refund/replacement but may be able to get them to get it repaired but you'll have properly have to remind them of there obligations under SOGA. Also under soga as been more than 6 mouths it down to you prove the fault is inherent to the item. Don't go in shouting just go in go here this faulty, here my proof of purchase(bank statement) I wish for you to sort it out under your obligations of the sales of goods act.
People confuse manufactures warranty for legal rights. A manufacture stipulate what every they fancy as there proof of purchase they could say we need a autographed photo of the store manger and you holding the console box if they fancied so there not wrong in what there saying. But that doesn't take away your statutory rights and that's with the shop not the manufacturer.0 -
