buying advice: 2001 bmw 318i vs 2004 VW Golf mk5
Am buying a car this weekend. Narrowed it down to:
2001 BMW 318i
60,000 miles
automatic
or a 2004 VW GOLF 1.6 SE FSI (mk 5)
auto
35,000
they are both advertised as the same price.
Any advice? Am looking for a car that is quiet, refined, and comfortable to drive. Also.. that will give me few problems. Not sure if the age of the bmw is an issue..

Buy the golf, BMW drivers have a certain reputation - not entirely undeserved.....I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling0

I wish i had this problem...Id get the bmw. Try and get the price down though.Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

Have you driven the bmw?, that model felt way to light for my liking, I test drove one ( X reg 318) in 2004 but bought a mk4 Golf GtI (2001, 51) instead.
I sold the Golf at the end of 2006 and it was a very good car, I would buy another one, finances allowing.
I dont think age will be an issue with either car providing they have been maintained properly but the 1.6 might be underpowered for an auto box in the Golf.0 -
Golfs arent what they used to be though the MK5 is supposed to be better and as good as the Mk3. I'd go for the Golf.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
