tax credits help pls

Hey all!

Just wondered if someone could clarify if maternity allowance is classed as income for tax credits? bit confused as I seem to get conflicting information!

We currently get £6 a week wtc, £80 (some odd pence) CTC.

I am currently on MA, but this runs out today actually! (been on it since april...09)

i included ma in my income for this year as was unsure if it counted or not? the guy on the phone didnt know either!

although a couple of online calculators when i put all information in come out that we should get around £80 a week WTC and £65 ctc..i know these are meant to be a guide but its quite a big difference!

All help appreciated!

if not do i ring them and change it and they backdate it?

thanks in advance!

    What income is ignored?
Some income is completely ignored for
    tax credit purposes. This includes:
    • maintenance payments
    • most forms of student income
    • adoption and fostering payments (but
    not any reward element)
    • Disability Living Allowance
    • Attendance Allowance
    • Child Benefit
    • Guardian’s Allowance
    • Income Support
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
    • Income-related Employment and
    Support Allowance
    • Bereavement Payment
    Maternity Allowance
    • the first £100 per week of any Statutory
    Maternity, Statutory Paternity or Statutory
    Adoption Pay
    • Severe Disablement Allowance
    • Short-term low rate Incapacity Benefit
    • Transitional long-term Incapacity Benefit

(that is, in payment since before 13
    th
    April 1995)
    • Industrial Injuries Benefit.
This list is not exhaustive and some

As long as its MA its disregarded. If its SMP you pay tax on that so its included.

I Had loads of problems last year with the tax credits as i was on Ma ( missed the smp cut off by 3 days!!!) I would make sure when you call them you tell them you are still in employment but its MA you are getting, they took all my WTC off me and told me to repay what i had already had during the year twice due to staff not knowing how the system worked! I eventually got it sorted and it all paid back but was such a hassle.
would love to win an ipad!

  • If your MA has now ended you are no longer classed as being employed for tax credit purposes until you actually return to work.

As advised already, MA doesn't count as income at all but if you received SMP anything above £100 p/w does count as income.
