Replacing a faulty item

Advice needed - Thanks in advance
I bought an item from a well know online retailer. However the product was faulty - I contacted the the retailer and they promised a replacement - three weeks later the retailer informs me that they cannot replace the item and can only refund the cost of the item.
Now I bought the item in the sales and it was a good price and ideally I would like a replacement - I have checked their website and they are selling the SAME product but now it is alot more expensive - so I am not too happy about this.
The retailer promised me a replacement and now they seem to be backing out. I contacted them and they are now only offering a refund.
What are my rights according to "Sale of Goods" act?

They are well within their rights to offer you a refund instead of a replacement in this case. Make sure that they also refund any p&p both from the delivery and your return. As far as the price of the item changing, how happy would you be if the price dropped on the item and they only offered a refund and this lower price, not much I'd imagine.0
