It's all very well blaming the web hosting firm, but the client will say: "How did YOU let this happen? You recommended them!" and if you're seen to just be blaming others it doesn't look that good - buck passing and all that!

There's no buck to be passed. The host is providing the service. It's a poor client that doesn't realise what they're paying for. Yes, you may embarrased that your recommended host is having a 'mare but try finding one that doesn't have the odd off day.

'Want carrier-grade uptime? Pay for it.' - that should be the motto of all web hosts :)
Therefore far better for any problems to be spotted first - but not to charge a client a completely ridiculous sum a year to do so (i.e. £600).

If you're happy to carry the costs and burden without your client paying for it then fair enough.

Some webapps I develop/maintain are monitored by nagios.

Reactivating this old thread - I am how looking for such a website uptime monitor and so far found http://www.AutoWebCheck.com which has a free service doing a spot check hourly and a paid for version at 1 Euro/month doing 5 minute checks. Tried to upgrade from free to paid for but seems not possible - have to delete existing account and no reply to my mail asking how to just upgrade, so what other good value options are out there?

BTW looking at the silly £600 price above makes me wonder.
