Weekend in London - Bayswater - pubs/clubs

Hi

For my friend's 21st In May, 5 of us are going to London for the night to see Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre.

We're staying at the Queens Park Hotel in Bayswater, which is part of a hotel and ticket deal, and we're travelling down from Scotland by Megabus and Easyjet to keep costs down, but it still all mounts up!

As none of us has ever been in London before I'm looking for advice on good, cheap pubs in the area.

Ideally we'd prefer pubs instead of having to pay to get into clubs, we're used to small local pubs, so as well as cheap we're looking for friendly and even better would be somewhere that has live music.

Hope someone can help!! :)

There are lots of pubs in that area. Bayswater is the road adjacent to Hyde Park and one of the perpendicular roads is Queensway. These are lively areas at night. Another area with lots of pubs is a couple of blocks to the east, Paddington. In May hopefuly the weather will be nice and you'll be able to eat and drink al fresco. One of my favourite pubs in the area is the Swan which is right on bayswater road near the tube stop of Lancaster Gate.

You can catch bus 15 or 23 in Ladbroke grove, at the end of queensway, to take you to edgware road where there are lots of cheap lebanese restaurants, I suggest Beirut express for the best juices and kebabs. The same buses then go through oxford st, down regent's st, trafalgar square, the strand and past aldwich where you will find the theatre. So this is a cheap option for you. Get an oyster card: you will find lots of info on this if you search, but basically you pay a deposit which you get back when you leave, top up the card and pay for each trip out of the card. it will cap daily spending at below the day travelcard price (check this since I haven't been to London in a few months, so nto sure if this changed).

I don't know about live music but perhaps someone will come along and help.

You will have lots of fun and the area you chose is cheap and safe, so great option!
  • Thanks for all that information, especially about the buses!
We're only staying the one night and coming home the following day, so I don't think the Oyster card would be of use to us this time, but it's good advice for future ventures to London. :)

Dont quote me on this!! LOL

There is a hotel called Norfolk Towers near Paddington station (http://www.bhrc.co.uk/norfolk-towers-london.htm) and it has a bar below it called "Cads" and certainly 3 years ago you could get very drunk in there very cheaply because it was selling pints at £1.20!!!

Its worth checking out or giving them a ring to still see if they do a great English brekkie and cheap beer. When we were there it seemed a popular place for contractors/builders so was cheap but very cheerful and a good singalong on a Friday night.
  • Foggster, that sounds pretty much what we're looking for! I'm gonna google it and see what it brings up, failing that I'll get their number and give them a call. Thank you. :)

Dont get put off if it comes up as a wine bar because it certainly aint!

We went there a couple of years on the run and on a Friday they have a karaoke which was good fun. Good memories!!! Let me know if its still as I remember it because we are due down there later in the week and I would love to check it out.
