the PC laptop accidentally downloaded a trojan called antivirus plus.
What's the best spyware removal for it? Happy to pay as long as it's trustworthy, but free would be best

Malwarebytes found and removed antivirusplus and a couple of other things, mostly tracking cookies, thanks. Another run of mwb after a reboot didn't find any infections, neither did adware, neither did AVG.
The problem now is that google via IE8 is still hijacked so that the first click through goes to an ad page, second click goes to the real destination. Chrome is fine, Firefox is fine. Hosts appears not to have been affected either. It's like antivirusplus installed something into IE8 to do a redirect via google.
But nothing is showing up on any diagnostics. Any ideas anyone?
(and thanks for the help so far)

post the malwarebytes log file and follow this

and post the log file that produces as well
looking at the log files allows us to see what infections there were and what further steps are neededEx forum ambassador

Best if aliEnRIK or Browntoa advises you or you could try the bleepingcomputer forum if stuck.

Please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the whole of the log
then run combofix as posted by Browntoa:idea:0 -
Thank you all, got it all fixed now.
ran hitman pro 3.5 following advice from another forum. It was a rootkit in HDD driver. Hitman did the job
We didn't run combofix but malwarebytes and AVG and Ad-aware didn't see it.
PHEW!!
