    what i am basically asking is if i was a joint tenant would i be liable for half the rent only (£135) as opposed to £270 less my mums ctb

    Well yes. Unless they decide that you have become the joint tenant in order to take advantage of the benefits system to maximise your mother's entitlement to benefit. That could make it a contrived tenancy and she could end up with no benefit at all, thus making you worse off.
