  • Talk to some gearbox specilaist. Where abouts in the UK are you? There are some companies I can FWD you onto.
  • hi,

wow everyone, thanks for all the help

I'm feeling a bit more empowered now & I've certainly got a lot more knowledge.

Thanks for the details on the automated manual gearbox. I'm thinking we'll probably buy a different car, and now I know what to look for it will make the choice a lot less daunting.:)

I'm off now for a look around the Honest John Motoring Website!

I live in Bury St Edmunds. The garage that I was talking to about a repair is in Colchester (was given their number by a garage in BSE who couldn't do the gearbox). Not lived here too long, so am at the stage where I don't really know anything about which local firms are the best yet. :)

    Thanks again,

  • Suzuki's and Chevrolets (Daewoos even in the Matiz) also have proper automatic boxes, nice to drive too being smooth and prgressive without that horrible jerkiness that every automated manual has.

    hi guys,

Just to say that the reason the gearbox failed is because (according to the dealer) something has come loose within the gearbox itself and punctured a hole in the gearbox.

Am still trying to find out how Fiat will handle this. If we have to get a new car, I don't think it'll be a Fiat :(

Any advice on my new situation? Fiat offer an 8yr anti-perforation warranty, which according to their blurb (QUOTE>>> However, should any corrosion occur - which can cause a perforation (or hole as it's more commonly known) - you're protected by an eight-year warranty.)

Should this cover the hole in the gearbox? Would you advise me to get an independent mechanic to look at the damage?

Any replies via this thread or by pm would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

Most of these warranties are to do with corrosion and paint and wouldn't cover a mechanical part failing cauing a gearbox to develop a hole.

Sadly as has been mentioned most manufacturers have problems with their semi-automatic gearboxes in the real world! Fiat's system is improved since Alfa had a lot of selespeed faults.

Fiat Panda is a good car however, but not sure the semi-auto with it is. Could always check with a specialist depending on Fiats offer.

Hi Flyingscotno1, thought their "holes" definition wouldn't cover the hole in the gearbox - knew there would be something :o just thought I'd check :p
    thanks

These silly manual/auto gearboxes should be avoided like hell! Regardless of make. Designed to bring down emissions (yeah right) and are generally, totally unreliable..
