IMO put him on the Clio as a named driver and just make sure he doesn't drive it all the time - being a named driver is not fronting unless you are the main driver of the car and not declaring it so.

I was a named driver on my Mum's Corsa until I was 18 and shortly after got fully comprehensive insurance on a 1.5 Nissan Almera for £1100 as the policyholder and main driver.

    Now insuring a 2007 1.6 Vauxhall Astra for £700 at 19.

Something must be wrong there?!? I insured myself as the main driver on a brand new1.4 16v sporting with all the optional extras for £1300 at 18 and that was 3 years ago. I assume you are named on the policy (as an additional holder)

Also consider the NCAP rating of the car as well as the insurance group, don't over-estimate the yearly mileage like most & think about an accelerator policy... 10 months cover to build up the all important no claims and in a few years he'll be paying £500 max on a sensible car if he's a good lad! The price of freedom I guess but we all have to do it.

I did add myself as a named driver, but didnt seem to make that much difference.

I think he is going to have to be named driver on the clio, if he bumps it i'll kill him lol

Thanks for all your help guys, it's all been very enlightening! I'm sure things weren't this expensive when I insured my little metro 17 years ago! :)

TBH I bumped my mum's car when I was driving it (5 days after passing my test :rotfl:)

Trust me - the future insurance implications of doing so will scare him enough without you killing him - I pay at least £200 more than I would without a claim :o
