  • It's not free, but I've heard that dazzle is very effective.

The Dazzle DVD along with some that are around £20 in Asda, Aldi (sometimes), connect the VCR to a USB port on the PC, hopefully USB 2 or you will get dropped frames. You connect the component cables (used for old analogue camcorders)from the front of the VCR or with a Scart to phono plug adapter the red and Black/white connectors are sound., and the yellow is composite video, to the dazzle or other adapter and the Dazzle to the USB on the PC. Don't expect DVD quality off the resulting capture as VHS is roughly equivalent to VCD at 352 x 288 pixels resolution (half DVD) and most VCRs have a 240 line resolution so is well sub broadcast standard anyway.
  • Another vote for the Dazzle vhs to dvd device, have had mine for a few years now and it works very well. As robredz said you wont get brilliant results but they are watchable and it is easy to set up.

Forgot to add there is usually basic video editing software (mostly cut down OEM versions of stuff) with the adaptors, to allow you to process the capture and author a basic DVD, cos not all DVD players will play mpeg, burned straight to a blank, it has to be converted to .vob, and placed on a structured DVD the Video_TS folder holds the vobs, and Audio_TS is usually empty.

You can get an adaptor from Maplin or asda or many markets for around a fiver, that plugs into the scart, and has the phono sockets for the composite cables there is a cheaper alternative from Roxio here:

and I think something similar in Asda for around £25, Aldi had one for £20 the other week, there may be some left if you look.
