Fake verified by visa

WARNING
In the last couple of days I've twice been presented with fake "Verified by Visa" pop up windows when paying bills/purchasing on line.
Have searched the internet but can find very little detail

Basically I've used VbV for past couple of years - no problem. Then last week when trying to pay a bill a pop-up appeared at just the right time but did n't look quite right. Not only did it ask for my password, but security number from back of card as well as my PIN number!! Cancelled the transaction and paid by phone.
Today when trying to pay my gas bill - same thing happend. This time when fake pop-up appeared I closed it down, pressed continue on the screen and this time the real VbV pop up appeared!!
Can only assume this is some sort of Malware/Virus on my PC as it did not happen on another computer when accessing the same sites
Have reported to Barclays and Visa but no response as yet

Anyone else had an similar experiences??

  • If the virus is on your computer there is very little that Barclaycard can do about it.
Well done on spotting it though.

Now make sure that you have up to date anti virus and firewall and thoroughly scan your system.

Depressing to hear this tale, and thoroughly predictable given the way VbV works - ie a fairly generic style window no matter what kind of card you have. Asking for a PIN is a giveaway of course.

Some 25 years ago I hacked the school computer using a similar method - spoofing a verification screen.

I quite like the MBNA log in system where it throws back a familiar picture everytime as you log in. Makes it more difficult to spoof your log in.

Make sure that you have a 'personal greeting', and look out for it each time that you make a purchase.

If you want to set up one, then go to the Barclays website, and search for 'Verified by Visa'. Follow the links to their VBV page, log in, and you can then change it. (I haven't given the direct link so that you know you are going to the correct page!)
  • Just stumbled across this topic, had the same thing happen to me today. A scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware cleared off a Vundo trojan infection, and the fake Verified by Visa popup no longer appears. I've also reported the scam to the hosting company that owns the IP address of the site used in my infection to try to get them to shut it down, in my case it appeared to be located at the ServerBeach facility in LA.

Loads of these things going about. They are NOT a virus they are trojans which the user has [stupidly] installed on their machine.

Be careful what you download and install. Trojans like any program just want to program and if you install them then they will program.

yes... had this going on for about a week now... neither my AVG anti virus or my full active version of malwarebytes is picking up the offender.

My experience is exactly as yours.. hardly anything on the web about it though...which I find amazing. I have tried online purchases thru exporer and firefox both are affected... when it comes to verification.. the bogus box pops up asking ,amongst other things.. for your ATM pin number !! oh yeah !! its a pain in the !!! this.. I have found that if you fill the 2 boxes...yes...there are two...(the real thing only asks one question.. your password this asks for mothers maiden name and a host of stuff..) and click send..I fill it out with expletives... and start the whole application again.. the real thing pops up second time.. and allows you to finish it. .. there must be more people been affected by this surely??

I would question the wisdom of doing this. As you've provided bogus credentials, any fraud should be unsuccessful, but you may find your account locked because of the attempts.

I suppose it depends if those details are then forwarded on - the logic being you provide wrong info to the fake site, before giving the correct info to the real site.

    Personally I wouldn't chance it!

Instead of "Stupidly", why not put "Accidentaly". Unless you are actively looking to annoy/upset/abuse people. Which in your case, is probably true.
  • I've just had this. I was trying to pay something to royal mail and I got V by V asking what is the sort code, something about my sister and they had her name and if any of the following names they provided did I live with. I thought how do they know my sisters name so I canceled, going to see if I can pay RM over the phone.
