I went to potato day event , You can take your pick as they are on sale by weight or number , At 17p a tuber or £3-25 a 2.05 kg bag more for the exotic types , They are held around the country till the end of March look up on the web for nearest to you , Run by local gardening groups at local schools and village halls with 50 plus types on sale you get to try new and old names .
Just an example four different types x 5 = 20 tubers cost £3-40, With names Blue Danube , Mayan Gold , Bf 15 , Annebella , to grow this year .0 -
Ive just bought some garlic from sutton seeds. It came as a massive clove.
It says to split the cloves & plant.. does this sound right?
I also bought some rooster potaotos i plan to set about chitting & it says plant from March.. I also got some Cara...these have no guidlines, do you treat these the same?
Thanks

Ideally garlic should be planted October/November as it needs a sharp cold spell to get the one clove you plant, to split in to other cloves to form a bulb - so get it in a s a p.
Roosters and Caras are both maincrop potatoes, so treat them similarly. I'm unsure where in the country you are but mine tend to go in, mid March at the earlies, Mid April at the latest.0 -
Sally A Thank you. Ill get them both chitting this weekend then, thank you. So the garlic i can just pop a clove in & let it go? Just cover with soil?

It may be worth going to one of these events if you only want smal quantities or want unusual varieties:

Prices vary from 12-20p per tuber, usually cheapest at events where there is an admissions charge.
Shame there isnt one for LondonWould love some advice on what sort I can grow early in a tub/ bin on a roof terrace.
I saw the £land ones but wasnt sure whether they were the sort of varieties I can grow in a bin -Maris pipers would be fine for us- first try- can you do maris pipers in a bin?
Sorry for v basic question ! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Went to 99p store today to get seed pots, bought 'Home Guard' and 'British Queen'. They were out of Maris Piper, King Edward & Charlotte, still for £1 a bag am not surprised!
Great tip, will be going there again.0 -
My local Morrison's are selling seed potatoes for £1, Red Rooster and Charlotte 5 in each. They are also selling rhubarb, asparagus, red onion sets (40) white onion sets(40)and I think they were a £1 as well.C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z Able Archer0

You can grow any spuds in a bin!
If you mean dustbin, you would put 3-5 tubers in it and earth it up as it grows. I'd also get some potato fertiliser and mix the correct amount into the base compost and add it in [at the correct ratio] as you earth up.0
