I've got the same problem - OH's birthday is February 17.

Dreading next year - its his 40th and I hate to think what that's going to cost

but if you start planning and buying bits early (really early... like when the valentines stuff gets sold off cheap after this one) then you wont notice the cost,

the money i spent on my OHs 40th didnt come as a huge shock as i starting planning months and months in advance, picking up a few bits everytime i had money (not often)
i had to do it that way though as his birthday is the first week of january and there was no way he would have even got a present let alone a surprize dinner party down the pub if i had left it til the last minute

this has reminded me of 2 of my OHs favourite presents ive ever given him...

first one was a photo album full of pictures, cartoons and little bits from our first few months, i googled up pictures of restaurants and places we had been too, found / drew cartoons of private jokes, stand out moments etc
put ticket stubs etc in and a few pics of us and wrote little comments, dates, reminders of things that happened all the way through it, he loved it...

his favourite though is along the lines of your pad, but instead of just handing over a book i got lots of coloured paper and wrote down things like important dates, catchphrases, in jokes, memories (like him telling me i was pregnant cos he saw the test first... or... xx/xx/xx the day we first met etc)
i wrote them out nicely, cut them out, folded them and put them in a nice jar (the ones with the metal lever to hold the lid in place) and i called it the smile jar because its just impossible to pull one of those bits of paper out and not smile,

its on the dresser in our bedroom and every now and again i pull one out and it just makes me feel better, ive caught him doing it too... but quite often you keep going til you have read them all! lol
  • I recently made my OH a giant cookie that I spelt I love you in chocolate chips on (stolen from sex and the city!) I just bought a pack of cookie mix from tescos (instead of loads of cookies just one big cookie) and some chocolate drops for the writing, Took about 10 mins to prepare and his face was a picture. He loved it, Only cost about £1.50 too! :)

    thanks curious george.

Unfortunately its my 30th this year so my 30th and his 40th are very close together - I have an idea of what I would like to do but I will have to see if it works ;)

Last Christmas my OH did something similar to what Curious George mentioned above.

He got a glass jar, with a screw on lid and inside were 100 pieces of card folded over. On each one it has a reason why he loves me written on it. He said that when I am feeling sad or down in the dumps I am to take one out and read it and it will make me smile.

    Total cost about £4.

To go with it you could cook his favourite food, decorate the table with candles and get a cheap bottle of wine or bubbly and any other little bits and bobs you may think he would like.

If you can spare £1, checxk out your local pound shop for some ideas. They have an interesting slap and tickle set!
