Please Help - Error in Tax Code

I am sorry if this is in the wrong place but i would appreciate any help and advice that i can get.

I have 2 jobs so i have 2 different tax codes.

Recently i recieved a letter from the Tax Office to say that my second jobs code from April will be BR. I was unsure what this meant because it completely baffles me. I have a good relationship with accounts in my day job and they offered to look over it for me.

I have been paying a lot less tax than i should have been for the past 3 years. My accounts department have worked this out and i owe about £700 a year in tax for the last 3 years. I was always under the impression that i was receiving the right amount

I cannot afford to pay this. Nor can i afford for my wages to be cut paying it back.

I have not yet recieved a letter from the tax office but i am so anxious and scared about it and i am not sure what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Tax code BR is usually emergency tax, ie when you first start a new job and while they get your details right. And its 20%, this also applies to second jobs. You should not have the same tax code for 2 different jobs at the same time.
  • I dont have the same tax code for both jobs. I have different tax codes. This is the first year that my second job have put me on the tax code BR. I was previously on 356L in my second job. My first job tax code is 6??L im not too sure of the whole code off the top of my head.

I should have always been on BR and i havent been.

I have had two jobs in the past 1st job(main one)code should be something like 256L 2nd job will be BR which means basic rate,1st job you will get your tax allowances from.
Just make sure your main job has the correct code I didnt but am now getting a nice £900 rebate.

The code BR is not just for emergency purposes it is the code for a second job.

My husband is a full time fire fighter and also part time retained firefighter, he has a tax code for his full time job and BR code for the second job.
You should have informed your second employer that you had another job and they should have put you on code BR. When you have your wage slips you should have checked. You will need to pay the difference back. Rather than waiting for the letter I would phone and explain the mistake and sort a payment schedule out rather than wait for a demand for the full amount!
  • They were told about the fact that i had 2 jobs 3 years ago and i am still in the same 2 jobs. I spent hours on the phone sorting the codes out initially to sort out the codes when i began both posts.

After spending all that time on the phone initially i expected that they would get it right and they would have me on the right code from the off.

I have informed them of everything that has changed.
