some of you may know a few months back we rehomed our parrot. when we rehomed him he went to a little known bird charity (songs of freedom) and i signed a piece of handwritten paper saying i was handing him over.

mr mob had previously asked another woman who works opposite his shop if she could rehome him which she couldnt. she popped in the other day to say that the woman we rehoused him with couldnt cope with him (he is a terribly noisy little !!!!!!) and so this woman had taken him on. she said that he's really ill (strange as the previous woman said she'd taken him to the vet and the vet gave him a clean bill of health after a beak and feather disease scare), anyway she said he was ill and needed veterinary care and was basically asking mr mob if we could pay something towards it because he was our pet.

mr mob told her where to go. am i right in thinking as we signed him over he is no longer our 'problem' (i dont mean problem as in the mean sense of the word).

a week or so after he left we had the rspca (grrrrr) round here to check our other birds and they are fine. as is the dog.

I would guess as you signed the paper it is their responsibilty. I mean if it was the other way round and you wanted the parrott back then they would use this against you.

Depends what the pieces of paper (both from you to the charity and subsequently from the charity to the other person) say but assuming it is a signing over of full "custody" to the other then there is no come back legally... not saying that morally is different but that would be the only question.

If you signed him over to the charity then all costs associated with his upkeep become their responsibility. If this other woman has now taken him on, surely she was aware that taking on a pet involves expense! What a cheek for her to ask you for money. Its got nothing to do with morality. Don't feel pressured into giving her money- perhaps he got ill because she wasn't giving him the right care/minerals etc- ie not your responsibility.
