Hope this post is in the right section? To cut a long story short i got dismissed from my job yesterday for gross misconduct i've read that it will be possible that i wont get any JSA for about 26 weeks, at the moment i am tenant living with now my ex work colleague and have done so for the past 3 years, i/we have signed a legal tenant agreement document, i pay him £80 every week, we also keep a weekly record of the amount i pay each week, can myself or my friend claim anything towards what i pay?

How can the OP claim income support??

    Who is eligible?

You may be able to get Income Support if you're aged 16 to 59 and any of the following apply:
    • you're a lone parent
    • you're registered sick or disabled
    • you're a student and either a lone parent or disabled
    • you're caring for someone who's sick or elderly
    • you’re pregnant and your baby is due within the next 11 weeks, or you have given birth recently and your baby was born within the last 15 weeks
If it is a singed tenancy agreement with the landlord- not your colleage- you may be able to claim some housing benefit

I thought you only couldn't claim for a certain amount of time if you voluntarily left your job (?)

You can still claim but there may be a sanction. You can be sanctioned for being sacked.

You can claim JSA even if you have been sacked. You may be faced with a sanction for a certain length of time but the sooner you claim the better it will be for you. You can claim Income Based JSA which may help to pay some of your housing costs. :)

  • You should be able to claim th money for help with your rent (LHA) whether you were sacked or not but will almost certainly receive a sanction which will prevent you from receiving JSA.

They can claim JSA but may be sanctioned.

If they are sanctioned they may be able to claim hardship payments.

While you are waiting on the outcome for JSA put in a claim for help with the rent - the LA will assess you on your current circumstances now while you wait for a letter from the DWP.

If you have a signed tenancy agreement with your colleague you CAN claim Housing Benefit, the only difference is that you are a subtenant rather than a joint tenant. :)
