Overcharged by EON
Hi Newbie here.
My Mother-in-Law changed to EON Economy 7 three years ago (to get the Tesco points!). A couple of weeks ago she asked me to help move her to Economy 10 as she wanted an afternoon top up and as she and her hubby were in their 80s it seemed like a good idea.
I rang EON and after a few minutes they announced that they had set the account up wrong 3 years ago and that they owed them £1000! Good news (to start with....)
Having fought them to make sure they did not "carry the balance forward to the next bill" which is what they wanted to, and to send a cheque, it then transpires that even though they ripped off the couple by £25 per month (by their own error) for 3 years they don't have to pay interest. Now they have offered 0.05% (£13!) + £20 "to say sorry". Am I being unreasonable to expect that this is just derisory? An extra £25 quid a month for a couple on state pension means a couple of visits to the pub for a pint and a pie or stuff for a family dinner. I don't want to lather the situation but this has really got my BP up.
Any views? Maybe the EON rep who lurks around here might have something to say, but one thing is sure. If we don't get satisfaction we'll be leaving EON as will the relatives and anyone else I can persuede.

Two things;
1) Given the current interest rates £1000 invested at £25/mth wouldn't have return much interest. Eon may also argure that the tariff is on the bill so as a customer we have a duty to check just like readings.
2) E10 will require a change of metering and very few suppliers offer/support it and it also costs about 5-15% more than E7.
Also they will have earned 1000 clubcard point, £40 on deals they would not have received.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi Trevor G,
To help us understand the case better can you let us know what caused the error in the first place?
As standard we don’t pay interest to customers on credit balances, in same way we don’t charge interest to customers who owe us money. Therefore any ‘compensation’ that is discussed would in 99% of cases be for poor service and system failures. Not for loss of interest purposes.
Let me have a bit more info regarding the error and I’ll try to expand my thoughts.

Anyway, a very nice man has rung from EON and we have agreed compensation etc. Matter now closed to our satisfaction. :T0
