  • I bought a smart phone online through Mobile Phones Direct couple of weeks ago. Definitely opted out of the insurance as it is covered in my home insurance.

Last week saw a nondescript email in my inbox and nearly binned it. Luckily I opened it and found I was going to pay £6.99 a month for insurance to City Main Administrators.

Needless to say I was livid with Mobile Phones Direct, sent a recorded letter, phoned twice and gave them an earful.

I've just received a letter saying the insurance has been cancelled but I'm going to contact my bank anyway just in case because I don't trust them.

Having found this forum I can see that my case is not a one-off mistake - they deliberately ignored my instructions.

I phoned Citizens Advice this morning. They said what these companies are doing is a criminal act and they would forward all my details to Trading Standards.

These practices need to be stopped but it will only happen if we all report them.

Phone number for Citizens Advice / Trading Standards is 0845 404 0506

Can anyone supply Citymain's email address please?
  • You guys are lucky. I just changed banks and was going through my direct debits, i always had two payments each month to a company called Citymain, i thought somehow it was for my computer magazine. Upon checking with my bank, they said it was for two different mobile phone policies with a company called kjc, wait for it, the contracts were taken out in 2000 and 2001, so i have been paying almost £8.00 a month for 13 years. I never take out mobile insurance anyway, never had so you can guess how unhappy i was with this one. I cant remember ever signing any paperwork to say i wanted insurance. When i spoke to Citymain, they confirmed that KJC no longer existed, so i asked why was i still paying insurance and how did the system work. ie, Citymain collect the money and retain part of it as a fee. Me thinks some fraudelant activity going on here. Operator was not able to answer all my questions and it was suggested i email the customer relation team at Citymain. I have duly done this followed up with a transcript of the conversation for my records. They are supposed to reply to me in 48 hours. I will leave it to the end of the week, then a recorded letter, if no joy then ombdsman. Have asked for all my money back less the cost of a years contract for each phone.

  • Actually sorry it does. I was being dumb :)
  • I noticed that there was £6.99 a month being taken from my bank account following a months free mobile phone insurance when purchasing a phone from mobilephonesdirect.co.uk.

They have had 5 months payments from me with no information about policy or any communication from them. I spoke with my bank today who have refunded me the money and are pursuing the company. My bank was very helpful.

Just realised I've been paying £5.99 per month since June 2010.

Cheeky !!!!!!s said that they wouldn't be able to refund me anything since somewhere on their 3 pages of smallprint they added a condition that the insurance had to be cancelled by the user.

I'm pretty sure I would not have signed up to anything that was an eternal rolling monthly fee like this for any more than 12 months.

The address they had registered for me was 4 moves old, would they even have paid out in the event of loss or theft if my current address wasn't registered?

BTW, somebody asked for their address

Early January I cancelled the direct debit to CityMain by calling Buymobilephones.net who I took it out with. I received a letter from Buymobilephones.net saying that my payment would be cancelled and no more payments would be taken. This letter was dated 14th January. The letter was signed by "On behalf of Citymain Administrators LTd". There was no address on the letter. No address f0r Buymobile and no address for Citymain. No VAT registration number. No registered address for either company. So not a professionally written letter. I happened to see that on the 21st January my regular payment of £5.99 had been withdrawn from my account. I was obviously not happy. I am with Barclays Bank and can cancel my direct debits online, I did this pronto. This is a warning to anyone who thinks Citymain or Buymobiles will cancel the payment, even if they send you a letter confirming this. I did complain to Buymobilephones.com and I got an email back saying "call City Main - 0333 999 7907 directly if you want your payment cancelled". Both Buymobilephones and Citymain Admin must be aware of customer dissatisfaction..... by now.... and if you read other threads customers arent happy with their replacement phones either.

For anyone else still looking into this, I'd recommend following mywardrobeisnarnia 's advice. I pretty much copied and pasted the email, tweaked it so that it worked for me, and the next day they told me they'd refund me £50! Cheers!
