Do you really need a new laptop. Adding extra RAM can make a big difference.
There are zillions of lappys around < £400 but you'll probably do best online.0 -
My present laptop is quite old, and I,ve already updated the RAM. My OS is XP and I,ve heard good things about windows 7. Just thought I'd take the plunge. Also my present machine is making odd bleeping noises every now and then. I,ve been advised the HD may be on it's way out.0

If you go a bit extra this is a good little number that I have...
Samsung R520 from Dabs.com0 -
If you decide you definitely want a new laptop and you don't object to purchasing online I'd recommend you taking a look at Dell's vostro line of laptops.
Don't be put off by the fact that they are from the websites 'business' section, you can still buy them. IMO these represent good value for money [STRIKE]and have the added benefit of 1 yr on-site warranty, which is appealing to most people.[/STRIKE] Scratch that - 1 yr 'collect and return' now.
Best place to look for current Dell offers, codes and deals is, dmxdimension. If you find something you like, get the e-value code and phone dell - you can sometimes get them to take a little more off.

Blimey, as mentioned earlier there are loads out there in this price range. I found this:

Has good reviews and at a reasonable price. Any thoughts?0 -
Check out the excellently-reviewed Lenovo Thinkpad X100e... A bit more like a big netbook, but, heh, you decide!0

failing hard disks don't make bleeping noises, even if it was failing, they don't cost much to replace (£35 or so)!!

Johnnytee,
Prior to migrating to Windows 7 it would be best to download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.
The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will determine if your current computer configuration will be compatible with Windows 7, for further information as well as a link for download please go here: wwwdotmicrosoftdotcom/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisordotaspx (Replace the "dot" with a period ".")
Another resource to verify compatibility is available at the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Center located at the following link: wwwdotmicrosoftdotcom/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/defaultdotaspx
Also, please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.
