Credit Check and the National Lottery!

I've just done my credit report for curiosity. Everything fine and dandy except there was a credit check done by Camelot when I signed up to the National Lottery on the internet.

This has foxed me somewhat as you can't play without putting money into the account and you can't 'overdraw' so why would they need to do a credit check?

  • It's to do with money laundering. They can't be seen to accept money from illicit sources.

The UK lottery is, also, only open to UK residents and the credit check is done to confirm residency.

I changed address a couple of months ago and the Lottery wouldn't accept a change of address because my new address wasn't listed on Experian. They won't accept your word that you have moved!!

It should be noted that this action is not a credit check in the same sense as would be performed (for example) on applying for a CC or loan. The entry on my credit report is marked as an identity check (or words to that effect). The accompanying documentation advises that this entry will not be visible to other institutions and is only recorded so that I know the search has occurred. It will expire after 12 months like a "normal" credit check
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
