Hello all,

As someone who has never played with credit cards I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. I want to by 2 long haul flights ASAP, but pay for them in June....can I get a Tesco 0% on purchases card and use this to pay for the flights? May be a very basic simple question to most, but I have never played and juggled with my finances, so never had a CREDIT card, just a debit one.

Many thanks (just read title and meant to type buy, not by!!)

Yes you can...you'll pay 0% interest until the offer ends...

Remember you still need to make the minimum payments on the card during the 0% promotion period.

If you've no credit history you may find it difficult to get a decent limit on the Tesco card though.

I do have a mortgage, 1 (small) loan and often do interest free at Currys/PC world and all household bills. All are in my sole name and are paid on time, so have a good history, but never a credit card. Minimum payments will be fine, just want to book the flights asap.

    Thank you both for feedback

  • If you do get the Tesco CC (or any other) keep in mind that the CC issuer may initially block the purchase of expensive things like flights, so you'll need to ring them and answer some security questions, and then they will unblock it so you can purchase. This happened with me on my Tesco CC when I bought a long haul flight.

  • Lots of ifs here, but:
    1) if you can pay within 3 months (contrary to what you said)
    2) if your own flight is with a star alliance airline and offers airmiles
    3) if your travel agent takes amex without a fee

Consider applying for the BMI Amex card. You get a generous airmile welcome bonus, will get more miles on spend, and miles on the flight (unless heavily discounted).

Don't let the airmile tail wag the "best value" dog.. but just a thought.

Yes, if the airline's own credit card offers a 0% purchases period, then usually they are worth going with so that you get extra FF miles (and usually a FF bonus for your first purchase, etc.).

Remember that the airline or travel agent will most likely surcharge for paying by credit card (frequently 2%).

    You could also try Halifax:

Thank you for the replies and helpful suggestions. I have applied for the Tesco one. Given £5,700 limit, which will more than cover the cost of the flights. I will also get extra points for purchase, which I'll be more likely to use than FF miles (as this is a one off).

    Thank you all
