Very much caveat emptor with private sales.
If you're looking to get the car repaired then find an automatic specialist from https://www.fedauto.co.ukThe man without a signature.0 -
Bad news mate you've got my sympathies - I don't think you've got any comeback to be honest. That said I wouldn't feel that you've "been done" or bought a lemon - if the rest of the car is sound then the gearbox could just have picked this moment to give out for whatever reason.0

You usually get some signs if a gearbox is on the way out.
In the old days people used to put axle grease in the gearbox if it was nackered and they wanted to sell the car. This used to disquise any symptoms.0 -
Until the caravan fiasco I would have said caveat emptor (and I still think that is the case). Search around on here (might be in the EBay section) and you will see a buyer sucessfully brought a case against the seller of a caravan (and in my view it was a clearer case of buyer being an ar$.e).
But if you do decide to try be prepared to lose.0 -

My parents had two gearbox go on there car without any warning at all. Once driving from Manc to Carlisle. Park up at night no problem next day can't find any gears. Second time parents had been out for a walk, a hour or so away drive away no problems get home fine next day no gears. They can just go.
But the fact he made you sign as seen doc is a bit suspicious but as other said its generally considered sold as seen with second hand item. Does anyone know if anyone been successfully though the court in this kind of cases which where it'll end up if you want to presue.0 -
Private seller uses a sign as seen document.
Hmmmm, one ponders if the seller was not a business?0 -

Not always!!! I have only sold about 3 cars in my 20 odd years of driving, and on all occasions I have asked the buyer to sign a receipt that has stated sold as seen on it.0 -

I agree. Otherwise the buyer can claim for faults at a later time.
It's worth getting the RAC ,et al, check if buying a decent 2nd hand car. It's fairly expensive but will find out any faults before purchase.0
