Making CHAPS payment from Halifax

Hi, need to put down our deposit for a house and will be transferring it using CHAPS. I cant find any info on the Halifax website about how to initiate a payment - must it be done on the telephone or can you do it online instead?
If anyone knows, the same question applies to Alliance & Leicester as my girlfriends account is with them.
Cheers

Certainly the 'phone for Hailfax .... you need to go via telephone Banking (or into Branch). Get it set up in advance!_from_Halifax_site wrote:CHAPS (Clearing House Automated Payments System) is a method of sending usually high-value payments (for example, to buy a car).
Payments are guaranteed to arrive safely and securely, and cost only £25 each. To send a CHAPS payment you'll need the receiving account name, number and sort code. The funds will arrive at the destination bank on the same day if we receive your instruction before 1.30pm on a bank working day.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
