Carers Allowance

My Wife's employment is likely to end soon for various reasons and we are wondering if she could claim Carers allowance and other benefits. Her friends have said that she should be able to claim in the region of £1000 per month.

I receive middle rate DLA, higher rate mobility, no other benefits but also work full time.

She has been working since she left school ~15 years ago and we claim no other benefits.

Is this carers allowance likely?

Thanks.

Hi Tim2100, your wife would be able to claim carers allowance for you, providing she cares for you for at least 35 hours per week. The rate for carers allowance at the moment is £53 (and some pence) per week. As for any other benifits, that would depend on the household income, mainly, from your post, your earnings. It would also be worth you knowing that she will be able to claim carers allowance if she was working, but those earnings cannot be more than £95 per week. Hope this helps.

You must get the care component (middle or higher) for her to receive carer's allowance
  • Thanks for your replies.

    I earn ~£30k

I receive middle rate care or Living allowance and higher rate mobility.

    Cheers
    Tim.

Your wife would not be entitled to any means tested benefits. You don't say if you work away from home. But if you do your wife would not be dealing with your care needs during the day. So would it not be better for her to be looking at another job?

I struggle to see where her friends have come up with a £1000 a month from. If she gets carers allowance that is only £53ish a week. Why not try using the entitledto.co.uk website and see what they say.
