Hi folks
I just received an email allegedly from "HMR&C" informing me that I was entitled to a tax rebate, in my case around £1000. On following the link to claim it, it asked for my internet banking log in code... (alarm bells tinkled....and then my PIN NUMBER...
Obviously, I logged out at this point, but has anyone else had this email??

Scam indeed - and a common and well-known one. Good move to stop when you did.
More info and warnings at: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/examples.htm
HMRC never notify people via email about rebates. Or anything at all really.
Rule of thumb is that any email from HMRC will never contain personal information of any kind, apart from your name. So every time you see an email like the one you got, drop it straight in the trash.0 -

You can check the current scams there, and forward on any new ones to hmrc to check.
Ah, beaten to it0 -
I bet the link had some dodgy looking URL too?0

If you havent setup the online self assessment at HMRC, I would recommend doing so.
You can then log in to your account through HMRC independantly of any messages you receive and see the position of your self assessment at any time.0 -
18 received in a 24hr period last week .... made me really think they wanted to refund me some money!!!
HMRC do not Email ...... unless you're registered for online access, and then only sparingly. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

If you submitted your internet banking login and password on one page before it then asked you for your pin code on a later page, change your password immediately, and contact your bank to ensure the details you supplied have not alraedy been used fraudulently.0 -
Pity that you clicked the link, that confirmed to the scammers that your e-mail address is active.
