Email problems - Socket error 10051

Options
Hi

I'm having trouble accessing my emails from home. When I try and access them from home I get socket error 10051. I've tried webmail, but I just get Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [mydomainname] (I've got my own domain registered)

However, I don't have any problems getting my emails on my phone or going to the website if I go through a proxy (but I'm not about to start putting passwords into some obscure proxy site)

Anyone know what the problem is and, more importantly, what (if anything) I can do to fix it.

Quick search revealed this means "network is unreachable." The company who is running your mail server have blocked port 25/sending mail through anything but their own server.

The server hosts I deal with give you a portal so you can log on to your email. They also give you smtp and pop3 settings so you can use email software like Outlook or Thunderbird.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Who is your ISP at home - sounds like they are blocking port 25

Talk talk I think. Was on Tiscali but I think they've switched me over by now.

You could try changing SMTP from 25 to 225 or 587, and if that fails, use SSL and port 465 - or you could use your ISP's SMTP server.
It can be checked that it is an SMTP problem by doing a receive only - not send.
  • Tried all those and no can do.

Incidentally, I can't get to https://www.[mydomainname] (webpage) either, but I can through a proxy. Is there a chance my IP is being blocked somewhere for some reason?

It could well be, and the only place that could be is your webhost - they may autoblock you for repeated logon failures - either to your hosting or your email.
