I viewed a house last night and took some pictures. One of the pictures was of the gas meter, what type of meter is this?

If you have a credit meter at your current property and pay on time advise you current supplier were and when you are moving. As they know you are a good payer (assuming you are) most will normally be happy to swap the meter to keep you as a customer. I am assuming you are a property owner, most suppliers have a different view if you are a tenant.

  • yes its a card you need to top up at a shop, hand them the cash they put it into a fancy machine and hey presto you have money on the card, then just pop it back into the meter and you should be up and running. I would check there is no debt on the meter first though or you end up paying somebody elses debt. It will keep you going for now until you get your new card through for which ever supplier you wish. Take a look at Ebico they are cheapest for meters and charge all there customers the same rate whether you pay by meter or direct debit, plus they dont charge any standing charges you automatically save roughly £70

You should also not use any card you find at the property but get one from your supplier, same it trur with electricity meters.

You'll have to switch suppliers as Scottish Power wont let you switch unless you've been them for at least a year or you pay themn £150 a meter security deposit and £30 a meter fitting fee.

Energy suppliers are tightening policy re removal of prepayment meters. Its not that they cost more per kwh than credit meters but you have to top-up before supply so no bad debt issue.

I don't think the supplier can intentionally configure a PPM to become a credit meter. In November 2008, Ebico suffered from a problem out of their immediate control resulting in their gas PPM customers continuing to be able to obtain unlimited amounts of gas without ever crediting their PPM. It was for that reason that Ebico said they would issue bills to existing PPM customers who elected to continue to use gas and not credit their meter. The crediting of the meter apparently immediately resumed the 'pay as you go' functionality of the meter.
