Are you travelling during peak season? If not, hold off booking until a week or so until you need the room. I booked and got great rates on https://www.wotif.com and if you are staying a few nights in one place also try https://www.not1night.com.au I will warn you, some of these Aussie sites look pretty basic compared to the likes of lastminute, expedia etc. I am an Australian who lives in England now and I used both of these websites for booking my accomodation when I went back home (Sydney and Melb). Also, on these sites the rates change really frequently and prices tend to get cheaper (although at these cheap rates also sell out) the closer it is to the day. I wouldn't take any risks at peak times though eg new years eve in Syd, Melbourne Cup etc.

I've worked at hotels in Aus. Ring them, ask them what their best rate is umm and ahh and tell them you will ring back later if they are the cheapest. If it is a non school holiday period i would leave it to the last minute. We could offer a 50% discount if there were rooms available on short notice.

    Thanks for the info!!

We are going in August arriving in Sydney hoping to drive up to Cairns fly to Alice Springs and back, then maybe fly to perth then back to Melbourne and drive back to Sydney!!! We have just under 4 weeks to do it - Question is are we looking at taking too much on and is there anywhere anyone would recommend.

BTW with SYD-PER-MEL you are going to get some extra jet lag, We did. Pick your flights carefully. I would try to avoid this if possible.

Driving from Sydney to Cairns is a very long way. I would suggest you drive from Sydney to Brisbane & fly to Cairns. Look at Jetstar or Virgin for cheap airfares. Jetstar is having a sale now, so you could be lucky in getting cheap flights for August. Enjoy your holiday.

We stayed here in Perth http://www.aaronsperth.com.au/index2.htm although I actually booked via expedia as it was cheaper than booking direct. We're off to Sydney in September and staying in the Aarons there as it was cheap. Maybe worth the cost of a phone call if expedia isnt cheap enough. :)

The Sydney one apparently has a bus stop right outside for transfers to and from the airport, which I thought was a bonus :)

I just pop in now and then.... :)

crazyhazel- have you researched this properly? Drive from Sydney to Cairns and Melbourne to Sydney....are you nuts?!! Do you know how far it is and how long it would take??!!! eeee gads I would take the advice of the aussielass and fly to cairns/melb. and stop over at perth on your way to or back from sydney. You have an awful lot of travelling to do in 4 weeks and you really wouldnt be doing yourself or Aus any justice! Just my twopenneth worth and I am not being nasty!

try this for good deals on hotels http://www.discoverwest.com.au
