Old paint peeling of artex ceiling when applying new paint

Hi folks,

Got into my new house (which is 9 1/2 years old) at the weekend and spent all weekend painting with family, even missing the football.

All went well until we tried to paint the textured artex ceilings.

As we applied the new paint in the upstairs bedrooms, the old paint started to peel off leaving bits stuck in the roller and hanging off the ceiling. Underneath the artex seemed quitesoft as you could squash it with your finger, but after half an hour it had dried out and was solid again.

Has anyone experienced this and can tell me how to remedy the situation.

Thanks

M

    Hi Morheus.

Being a decorator I come across this quite often.
What you need to do is this.

    1) Remove any old flaking paint with a stringent hand brush ( be sure to wear a good quality mask as the artex may contain asbestos.
Buy some Unibond Super PVA, say 500ml.
    2) mix pva with 20% water and apply a good coat to the ceiling using a brush onl, not a roller as this could pull off old paint.
    3) Paint as normal.
What goes around - comes around
