Hello MSers just to thankyou all for your replies, and also update that i have actually found a place nearby( sewing machine suppliers) they are doing a brother sewing machine, but being new to industrials i don't know what to look out for and what to stay away from.

I would be grateful for any advice as i want to do my homework on them before i go to purchase!

Oooh yes- it is definetly worth knowing what to look for! I have no info on which industrial machines are good/bad but I'd say speak to a machine repair service person- they are likely to see what goes wrong.

You will need to get your normal machine repaired or sort of MOT'd every 2 years to keep it in good working order (its not essential but recommended as things can come lose or become faulty, if things are not fixed in good time they can result in the machine's failure to work. Most people get on fine without too many checks but personally? better safe then sorry!) When you get the machine checked, maybe ask then.

Would be great if there was some kind of forum or something similar!

Are you at all linked to a college/have you left a college recently? the tutors there that teach some sort of textile studies (if there are any) would be good to brain pick- even if you didn't study with them, most people want to help and can offer advice.
  • We used Brother machines in one of the factories I worked in and they were quite good machines. If you get the chance to buy any extras from them at the time of buying do. It is useful to have a zipper foot or a piping foot (I have a piping foot and use that to put zips in) and a gathering foot is handy too if you are going to do anything with gathers. They are quite expensive if you buy them seperately.
