Hi I have been on my mission since 11am and it's now 5pm and not nyet finished. There are several things that I would like help with before I get too far.

I installed the recovery disk but it only needed 1 disk out of 6, I opted for a repair,,, should I have reformatted the HD and taken the other option?

I have just downloaded Avira and scanned the computer and it has found a virus BDS/Hupigon.huap it asks if I want to repair?? I usually send viruses to quarantine.

Will I be able to download my Itunes again free of charge?

    Thanks

Hi again dee; let's deal with the virus first; sending it to quarantine is fine - is there an option to delete the virus from within there? If so, do so.

A repair install is absolutely fine - in addition, documents remain untouched which is good - in so far as your original intentions. Why the reinstall in the first instance? Virus/malware infection?

As an alternative to Avira - if you are having any issues with it - might I suggest the superb Avast;)

    HTH.

Hi no option to delete only repair! Repair all or Cancel

I tried a number of free anti viruses in the past and Avira doesn't seem to slow down my computer too much.(It's 4 years old and needs updating)

I got confused I think...backed up data incase things went wrong with a repair.I opted to repair but I can't find any of my old files on my computer so don't know what happened.

Do you think I should start again and opt to reformat the HD?

Where did the virus come from??

I have all my precious files on an external hard drive and photos also backed up onto cd.....

I am quite prepare to start again if that's what's needed

    Thanks so much

I would think it's unnecessary for a complete reformat IMO; it does not sound as if your machine is displaying any erratic behavior - and that's when I would call for a complete nuke/reinstall. I would suggest: when the machine is idle, could you run a FULL scan with Avira, although it sounds as though you have already done so.

Where from? Viruses can come - surreptitiously or otherwise - from emails, browsing, torrents....

That's a little disconcerting...could you install Spybot, update and run a full scan, and see if that same virus/malware is picked up?

Depending on the virus concerned some av software will only give an option to quarantine as deleting sometimes allows the malicious scripts to operate. Try searching on Sophos's website for more detailed analysis Click Here
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Hi done a full scan with spybot and nothing came up,,, have rescanned with avira and it shows up as being in quarantine, running anoher spybot.

Will that be enough or should I delete it from quarantine?

    TIA

That should be sufficient dee; I thought you stated earlier that there was no option to delete  Are you at least able to 'empty' the quarantine vault.

It really does sound as though your machine is clean IMO; I suppose you could install and run a scan with malwarebytes but it's looking unnecessary...

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I am up and running now thanks to all the help I have been given !

The displays seem a bit different - need tweeking a bit.

I installed Word and will try the Macro that Oneday77 suggested.
I can't seem to register it though ! A copy of Microsoft Enterprise 2007. I have the option to register online but it won't let me.

Looking for a program to store/sort my photos. I have been using Picasa but was wondering if there was a better one.

I think I migt be able to find my Itune downloads on the external hard drive as i copied everything onto it.

Thank you everyone for 'nursing' me through the whole process. It has certainly been an education. I believe I could do it again, in a fraction of the time, if I had to.

    Thanks again

Glad you got it all sorted dee;); let us know if you need any additional help.

    Regarding the Office/Word backward compatibility:

Make sure you have the appropriate display/graphics driver installed.

I Suppose it depends on what you intend to do: you could try the freeware http://www.irfanview.com/ ;)
