Telling employment agencies you are NOT going to study after summer

They are much more likely to offer you a job, saying otherwise would be lying


(by agency I mean Reid, Select, Adecco, ManPower etc.)

Have any of you been told 'we're not taking on any more students over summer, only permanent workers'?

Would any of you lie (would there be any point as they would find out eventually! and never give you work again!)

    Ryan I think your pushing you luck on this forum, opening the wrong type of threads and replying in an irresponsible manner to some of the questions asked.

    Agencies have good memories and computer systems that never forget you.
    You could do it once, and get away with it... but don't ever think you'll be able to go back there and get a job again.

    If other agencies ever want them as a reference, you'll get in trouble again then too. Its not worth it...

    tbh it seems common, I wouldnt do it it, I have integrity, but if its the difference between getting a job and no then I can see why people do it. Dunno what the answer is, maybe there needs to be more opportunities for students, thinking about it my company could prob use a few extra bods for 10 weeks or so, I doubt anyone has ever even considered it though.

    Honesty is not always the best policy.

    Last year I applied to 12, yes 12 agencies.
    Those were the ones out of about 25 who said they *would* put a student on their books, the rest said they didn't "accept students".

    Why?
    Because alot of places only want to hire for 4 month minimum contracts.

    There *are* some recruiters that specialise in student and international work, but its often very bad, poorly paid work that may last between a couple of days to a week or so.


    If you know you're not going to go back to the agency, then you can try it.

    Afterall, you may like the job and the money...take a year out to get some cash behind you and then go back to Uni.
    Or you could really be not wanting to go back to Uni, then change your mind.

    Your only real concern is the legal matter pertaining to breaking an employment contract - although if you're on an agencies books then its unlikely you'll be committed to one of these.

    Really, if you're working as a warehouse worker, picker, packer or shelf stacker then theres not much problem with you just quitting as they can probably just replace you easily, but if you're working in an office in a specific role then thats another matter.


    Really what you should be doing is putting in some real effort, prep your CV (ok you should have done this before Easter) and mailshot as many companies as possible, ones you want to work for and will look good on your CV and ones that will just let you earn some cash.

    Even if they're not advertising for students/workers, they may be able to find a place for you, especially if you're willing to learn and they can pay you minimum wage.
    Not to mention, you may just get a further job offer, after summer or for when you finish at Uni.

    Mailshot a good 200 or so and you should get a good chance, with emails its even cheaper as you don't pay for postage.

    Wait a few days and followup with an additional email or preferably a phone call to make sure they got your application/enquiry.
    Plus this shows them you "care" and you're not just "firing and forgetting".

    - Really you should have 'mail shotted' over Easter to get replies towards the end of easter and towards summer.
    Why? Well it gives you more of a chance....plus you ned to enquire BEFORE high-school clears out, because then all the 'easy to get' manual jobs like packing, stacking and picking go to the 16/17 year olds who they can pay alot less.
