I received info abt this from CNET, I currently use Avast 4.8 home edition. Should I download the newer version? Or stay as I am, if I did install would I need to unistall the 4.8??

AFAIK, no need to uninstall; new version over-writes the previous ;). I know that version 5 has been in beta for a while; if it's out of beta then no reason not to install; colleagues of mine have been using the beta without any problems whatsoever.

    HTH.

It doesn't say anything abt beta, just that it was released on the 19th jan. Thanks.

I've read on other forums about some folk having probs. It seems it's a beta. I'm going to wait a few weeks first.

No it is not a beta, it is the finished article!!
However you are correct in saying some people have had problems after installing, but then others have reported the install went OK.
A problem seems to arise if your computer has Cyberlink DVD installed on it.
  • i have a new netbook without cyberlink on so i think i will install tomorrow
    wish me luck

I've just downloaded it and installed over the old version without doing any uninstall. It went on just fine and has picked up the old registration. It required a reboot as you'd probably expect with Windows.

This is on a Lenovo S12 netbook running XP SP3
  • I waited a while but have now downloaded version 5 over the existing version 4.8. No problems at the moment (windows XP).
I think they sorted the Cyberlink DVD problem pretty quickly.
