Avoiding paypal fees - please help!

Hi,

I've just sold an item on eBay for £2,500 and I was hoping for cash on collection but the buyer wants to pay by paypal but this is going to cost almost £80.

I've got a premier account I read somewhere that if I downgrade to a personal account I won't have to pay fees to receive funds - is this correct?

If I downgrade will the buyer still be eligible for paypal buyer protection and be able to use ebay checkout and 'pay now' option as normal?

Thanks

If the guy is paying with Paypal, then DO NOT let him collect the item!!

If he uses PP, then you MUST send the item via trackable method.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Downgrading won't help , you'll pay fees regardless.

    £80 is that all...;)

Offer him a discount for cash, but carries it's own risks.

The other way is a building society cheque - Nationwide's has no charge.

I did this for buying my car, and the seller was happy with this.

  • The reason why you must not let someone pay by Paypal and then collect is that some unsrupulous people pay by Paypal, collect, then file an item not received dispute which Paypal allows as you have no proof you sent the item, no tracking number, and even a signed receipt will not mollify them!!

...and when you post it, make sure you have enough insurance on it so if it goes missing you can claim from your courier! :)

  • I'm sending it insured via a courier. Otherwise I would definitely only require cash on collection.

As it turns out he's happy to do a bank transfer - is there any risk to me?

No risks with a bank transfer afaik, there are no fees involved and he can't do anything with your account as you are only providing details that could be found on your cheque book.
