Cheeky cost cutting with Virgin Mobile

For some reason , when you buy a Virgin Pay as you Go phone from the carphone warehouse it is unlocked so if you want you can use it on any network (the networks subsidise the costs of the handsets - they hope to make money back through calls).

So tip 1 is buy a virgin payasgo from carphone warehouse (not anywhere else)

[maybe you should feel a tad guilty as you are screwing the networks hehe..]

Then stick with virgin , here's why:

- free voicemail - useful if you screen calls, don't want to speak to people but want to be able to pick up important messages - in the middle of the day, getting voicemail can cost a fortune! http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/services/tariff/tariff.html

- look the their bundles - https://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/bundles/index.jsp

I think Richard Branson has done well here - I am a light user - it seems okay for me.

Many of my mates get 100s of incuslive mins in their contracts - they ring me so it's not a problem

Only drawback is, you dont' get a 'flash' phone

You do know that you can buy any virgin phone and when you've bought a minimum of £30 airtime you can call their customer service on 789 and simply ask them to send you the phones official unlocking code?

You have to supply your IMEI from your phone though.

This means you can get an unlocked phone relatively quickly and you aren't risking having your phone broke by someone 'unlocking' on the local market / cheap mobile phone shop.

Don't forget the FREE text messages (up to 1000 a month) to other Virgin users until Sept!

Oh and if you introduce a friend to Virgin, you can both get £10 airtime.

Also, you get 10% of all the airtime you buy....to spend on a new phone!

So if you spend £300 over 2 years on airtime, you get £30 off ANY Virgin mobile phone over their website, even ontop of any extra deals.

(I got my K750i for £150, with £55 free airtime and then £45 knocked off!)

Yeah, but carphone warehouse sell it unlocked - it's just the way their system works. So save yerself £30. But Virgin appear to be good anyway.
