La carihuela is between Torremolinos and Benalmadena, right on the seafront with its own promenade....beautiful place......

hotel Rui nautilus and Hotel Amargua are especially good...
and the restaurants around there are fab.........
you can walk from torremolinos to Benalmadena ( and through La carihuela )along the promenade on the beach front.......
its a great base for seeing the coast either way
further past malaga you have Nerja and the other side further up past Benalmadena you have fuengirola and puerto banus and Marbella as far us as Gibraltar.......

Mijas is not at all "twee". It's beautiful.

yes i did answer my own question! I was just feeling like being silly. last year in feb we stayed in elviria near marbella and loved the villa but not the exact area and tended to go into Marbella to eat on an evening. Because accommodation is quite expensive compared to javea where we're used to I've been looking at other areas on that coast but nearish to the airport. any suggestions of alternative resorts would be very much appreciated. the particular villa we were thinking of booking said it's in Torreblanca i think near Fuengirola and from reading other posts it sounded like ti was quite quiet and I liked the ideas of the spanish restaurants in fuengirola but maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick. We stayed in benalmadena puerto in a flat one year and liked it but want somewhere with a pool but the beach near there was one of my favourites ever. I've been trying to work out where Carihuela is from there as that sounds like it's got lots of nice restaurants. as you've gathered eating simple spanish food with spanish people is No 1 criterion when we're looking for where to stay and big steaks with sauces at "posh" expensive restaurants or pie and chips isn't. thanks

We stayed in Torreblanca, (possibly Torreblanca del sol?)up a chuffing mountain it was!
It was a good base for railway going up and down from Malaga to Marbella. Also went to Gib on the bus. If going back I would prefer to stay in Torrimolinos. I liked Benalmadena too.
Fuengirola was not bad but I wouldn't go back to there. Don't think it was British overun. Lots of Spanish on hols there when I was there.

We never hired a car as transport links are excellent. The rail service is clean and reliable as are the buses :D

Fuengirola=~Blackpool with sun....which isnt so bad. Makes a good base for exploring the coast and interior.
ETA popped a few bombs there a while back but who cares?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Only difference between the two is the local authorities in Spain don't allow the usual settee's and rusting Ford Cortinas with the engine and boot missing abandoned in the front yard.

Otherwise same sort of place and people, chavvy all day breakfasts, Rose and Crown karaoke, Sunday lunches and cor luv a duck accents, really I suppose everything from home, except less foreigners then in the uk.......enjoy

well we enjoyed Fuengirola. didn't like the front where the London pride pub etc were and didn't spend much time there apart from the occasional early evening stroll before we went into the little back streets to join the spanish for some lovely spanish food. On the last day (isn't it always the case!) we travelled further along the front and i think we were probably in las boliches area and had a great lunch at a chirungito can't remember the name. Wouldn't probably want to go in august as we would want to be on the beach and can imagine it would be too busy. Liked the walk along the promenade from benalmadena marina (where we stayed a few years ago) towards carihuela where we had another couple of lunches in chirungitos - lovely. Only got to Mijas once but it looked lovely.

we stayed in Cabopino, which is very pretty and has a lovely beach & really nice restaurants. Went to fuengirola for shopping only, as really didn't like the place much.
