I have just had a pathways interview. They mentioned that if I start work I may be elligible for tax credits. Iam not ready to start full time yet but could try and do part time hours.

I did the qualify test for tax credits and according to that if I was to start work tomorrow :P at 16 hours a week I would get £812. I would be classed as having a disability so I do not need to work full time hours to get entitlement.

Is this figure correct? It seems quite high.

If this is true then this with the return to work credit of £40 a week would after travel and paying lodgings to my mum who has kindly refused while I am ill would make working part time finiancally more rewarding then benefits.

We would need more info. Did you work in the last tax year, if so how much did you earn or get in benefits? Have you worked in this tax year, if so how much did you earn? What other income have you had this tax year? Are you single? Do you have any children? Would would your gross salary be? Is it £812 per month or per year you were quoted?

last year I had £7482 earned in total. I have worked for 3 months this year before being unable to work again, currently on benefits since sep and statutory sick pay from june. Have 0 children and my gross salary this year would be around maybe 9000 estmated if I got a job from feb to april.

Sorry the 812 was what was quoted on the tax credits qulaifying test after I put in all my details(last years wages, disabled, 0 children, and workign 16 hours a week if i got a job)
  • You'd also be liable for housing costs/council tax or it could affect your mum's entitlement if she receives either and you live there.

Take the "better off in work" calculation with a pinch of salt in my experience - they're frequently wrong.

Return to work credit is only for a limited time.

Give it a go - but be aware of potential problems before you start. A visit to the CAB/Benefits advisor might be a good idea before you go ahead - and get anything a Job Centre Plus employee tells you put in writing, just in case!

Im guessing the £812 is per year, which is payable weekly or monthly. In work credit is only for 52 weeks.

Yeah, that sounds like the situation I would be in If I managed to ge a job soonish(robably hard going in todays climate). The £812 is paid with the wage, so would it be split over the ramining payments in this tax year?

I have never claimed tax credits before did not really know what they were for and always assumed you need a kid :P So I have no idea how they work, payments or qualifing criteria.
